“I’m an eye surgeon, an ophthalmologist. But those eyes belong to a whole person. As I look at my patients, I see the whole person and all that it encompasses.”

In practice since 1990, Dr. Arla Genstler has been part of the Manhattan and Topeka communities since 1994. Her involvement in health care began early, having spent the first 14 years of her life in West Africa, Thailand, Penang and Singapore, where her father served as a medical missionary and public health advisor. During medical school, Dr. Genstler was very active in mission trips to Mexico and volunteered at the local community free health clinic.
Dr. Genstler received her medical degree from Loma Linda University in California in 1986. She was accepted to the University of California at Irvine for her ophthalmology surgical residency, where she served as chief resident during her final year of training. After completing her residency in 1990, Dr. Genstler continued her training with a fellowship in refractive surgery through the University of Utah. She is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

During the past 25 years, Dr. Genstler has become well known for her excellence in cataract and refractive surgery in Northeast Kansas. Having performed more than 25,000 cataract, refractive and laser surgeries, Dr. Genstler has touched many lives. Her personable style and commitment to individualized patient care make her a favorite among referring doctors.

Dr. Genstler has an ongoing commitment to keep our technology current. In early 2024, she acquired two RxSight Light Delivery Devices for cataract surgery. “This is a game changer for cataract technology!"

"To have the ability to customize a patients vision after cataract surgery provides patients with the visual outcome they desire without glasses. As a cataract surgeon, you can’t ask for much better than this!”

In 2007, she acquired an Intralase laser, making her the third physician in Kansas to have this technology.“This allows us to perform all-laser, blade-free Lasik surgery,” Dr. Genstler said. “The technology not only offers more accurate laser vision correction but an added safety factor that is very attractive and comforting to patients.” In 2003, Dr. Genstler built the current location of Genstler Eye Center in Topeka. Her building also houses the Topeka Surgery Center, a fully Medicare-approved surgery facility. The need for additional space prompted a new office building in Manhattan in 2011. This has allowed Genstler Eye Center to have two doctors in the office each day of the week to better serve the needs of the Manhattan community. The newest Genstler office opened in Lawrence in 2017.

When not in the operating room or clinic, Dr. Genstler can be found on her ranch in the Flint Hills or encouraging people to take charge of their health by adopting a healthier lifestyle and diet. Dr. Genstler also enjoys history, gardening, travel, her two Labs and spoiling her seven grandchildren.
